Is this a Native American napkin ring?

I found something similar online a few years ago, it was called Iroquois or Woodland Indians. Then, today, I found a pair attributed to Chippewa that sold at auction; they appeared to be lined with leather. Mine has a velveteen type lining.

Is this Native American? Am I on the right track? Thanks! Native_American_beaded_napkin_ring_1.JPG Native_American_beaded_napkin_ring_1.JPG

I think it is possible it is Native American. You don't say how large it is, but I vote for something decorative to thread a braid through. Seems kind of fancy with the velvet interior for a napkin ring. The velvet would keep the hair in place.

That said: I've never seen a Native American hair wrap like this - most seem to have fringe and not so solid.

    Kind of pretty...

My oversight! It's 1 7/8" high and rigid so it would be quite a hassle to pull hair through it. The other NA rings had leather in some cases, but not all linings were described. Thanks for your input, Leslie!

This could be someone's bead loom project, based on an NA design.

This one is described as a 19th century napkin ring, made in a French convent -

There were French Catholic convents in Quebec that taught Native girls and women European styles of embroidery and beadwork. The influence can been seen in Iroquois crafts such as their Victorian "whimsies", and souvenirs such as napkin rings may have become popular and more widespread.

The Iroquois did like the faceted type of beads used on your piece, but the beadwork appears to be a simple loom woven band, applied to the velvet ring. This is not a technique I associate with Iroquois work. The beadwork on the French example is a more complex technique.

So, it may be difficult to accurately attribute yours to any particular culture.

I saw the Convent ring, construction and lining material differ. So, mine may stay a mystery. I appreciate all who commented!

Quite a few years back, I volunteered at an archaeological site that was next to and in conjunction with the Seneca Nation. The Seneca have a museum including beaded objects. You might try asking to see if they know.
