Hello, I have this Attic jug, height 17.5 cm. Looks like picture of Dionysos on it. Is this a common type and likely to be genuine?

Sorry, auction house hasn't provided this. I won the piece and can show a picture when I collect it.

How did the auction house describe it?

That would be Donati Arte Classica, a well known Swiss dealer of art and antiquities. A good provenance, and they have been selling for several generations.

I can't say if it is genuine, that is not my area of expertise, but it is a beauty, and the provenance is good. Will they send proof of the provenance?

And you asked if it is a common type, yes it is, that much I do know.
And many Attic vases were made in Italy, in spite of the name 'Attic', which refers to the type, rather than the origin.

I would bank on the provenance provided. Good auction houses have reputations to maintain. And for other readers who are wondering if this was found in someone's attic, the term here refers to "...the ancient region of Attica (containing Athens) and the specific dialect of Ancient Greek spoken there, known as Attic Greek. It was the literary standard and most widely used dialect in Classical Greece. The term also denotes Athenian characteristics—simplicity, elegance, and refinement—and relates to architectural features (an "attic storey")."
