Featured Dutch Windmill Landscape Attribution & Info please

  1. I bought this pretty little painting at a thrift store near Palm Springs. It measures 20.5" wide, 16.5" tall. It's an oil on board, newly framed with modern hardware. It's signed and dated but I can't make out the artist at all. Please chime in if you have an idea who it might be! I'd also like to know when you think it was made or any other info you might have on the work. Thanks!

Nice painting! I like it. Needs a good cleaning though!
Could be Hofmeister. I can see it.

  4. That's a really good guess -- I can see it too!

My immediate thoughts were Hofmeister and I can't think what else it could be. Strangest 'H' I ever did see though. It's not necessarily Dutch however. Germany has its fair share of windmills. Denmark is pretty windy as well. I think Hofmeister is more of a German name.

Heightened the contrast etc a bit. Looks like Hofmeister for sure.

Those are different models, this model is very Dutch.;)
Yes it is, but not only do we have many German names through centuries of migration, but the Dutch landscapes and picturesque traditional costumes have always attracted foreign artists.

It is definitely a type of Gothic H. It is one that I usually use when writing, and AFAIK Germanic.....Calligraphy is a bit of a hobby of mine, or rather was 'til the old eyesight said otherwise!:(

BTW. Nice painting. It will be nice to see it cleaned!
