Featured Old medicinal bottle featuring Uncle Sam

A representative of the Berwick Historical Society did write back. This is the email:

Thank you for contacting the North Berwick Historical Society. These particular bottles came in two different sizes - 4” and 6”. Richard Henry Hurd started his business in North Berwick, Maine around 1884 in a large building on the west side of Main St. known as the Ricker Block. Then in 1893, he built the Commercial Block on the east side and ran his business until his passing in 1937. Then his wife, daughter, and son-in-law ran the business for several years thereafter.

Richard prepared an array of different prescriptions and this patented medicine. For this bottle, after purchasing the rights for Baker’s Great American Specific in the early 1880’s, the medicine was prepared and sold up until roughly 1905 to 1915. It most likely corresponded with the passage of the 1906 Pure Food and Drugs Act. That halted a lot of patent medicines across America that couldn’t meet certain standards for strength and purity. But, Richard was a great pharmacist and an honest businessman.
