    I've seen it before. There was generally a skeleton key used to open/close the latches and also open the drawers. It kept your five year-old, and possibly light-fingered help, out of the candles.

    Just try finding a solid wood chest with that sort of veneer now for US$200. They charge more for Ikea.

    Thanks for that information AJ, here in my shop I consistently sell them for $100. I’ve sold damaged ones for craft use for $25-$50. Back before eBay at antique shows these did $200 and up.

    Makes sense that they are much more expensive in the US. I think the ones sold here are much too cheap for what they are. I guess it is just a case of local overload, just like a lot of Indonesian art. When there is a great supply, people don't appreciate things for what they really are.
