Tiquer - I was just past the old Coleco HQ a few weeks ago. I think it's apartments now, more's the pity. It's across from the movie theater, turned Walgreen's, but now a Dollar Tree.(Bletch)

It is also used for hand in Dutch slang, only with a Dutch spelling. Dutch has incorported quite a lot of Yiddish and Hebrew words, thanks to the important Jewish communities in the Low Countries.

 

Not Ladino? Or was it Ladino too? IIRC a lot of the Jews in the Netherands came escaping the Inquisition.

 

They did, in fact Sephardic refugees were the first large Jewish community in The Netherlands, followed by poor Ashkenazim who had no chance of (socio-)economic opportunities in the German and Polish lands.
There are a few words of Portuguese origin in Dutch, introduced by the Sephardim, and some of the Hebrew words could have come through them as well. But I guess there are more Yiddish words because the Ashkenazic community was much bigger.

Many Sephardim left the Netherlands again to set up plantations in the Dutch West Indies, which meant there were fewer left in the Netherlands. They had more money than the Ashkenazim and saw the plantations as a good business opportunity.

 

I knew a bunch of Ashkenazim ended up in Belgium due to the gem trade, but not the Netherlands.

Found a few weeks ago at a Value Village when I was looking for a cane of all things(tore a calf muscle).

They're Taxco sterling silver. According to what I've looked up based on how things were(and are) marked, the stamp identifies they're at least post 1979, so vintage I guess. I didn't know any of that until I got them home though, I just loved the design.
