I would place the delicate lines of the stormclouds in the Qing period. Qing decorations were more refined, whereas Ming porcelain generally has bold lines and often more saturated blues and iron reds.
So antique, but not Ming imo.

 

Hello Any; Yes that is an interesting observation. What about the lack of pitting or bubbling on the bottom of the piece. Is that any indication it might not be authentic Ming?

 

Not all Ming glazes have flaws, but most do. It should certainly be taken into account along with other clues.

Another Qing detail is the way the glaze stops on the footrim. It has a nice even ring without glaze, whereas Ming glazes continue all the way to the bottom or look irregular.

That is indeed Ming style, with bold lines and colours. Not sure it is genuine though, difficult to tell from a photo.

 

Most def AJ, with all the pseudo-experts on Ebay clueless about what they're peddling (perhaps the majority of Chinese items),it's a 'proceed w/ extreme caution' zone.

The ring is the ring of glaze around the footrim.
Maybe you read over the sentence before that one, but I hope that explains it further:

 

so youre saying the footrim has no glaze other than a very narrow outer ring?

 

The glaze stops very evenly and precisely around the footrim, a characteristic of Qing (and later) glazes.

Hey I wanted to ask you another question: some of the experts talk about the shape of the footrim to help authenticate. As I understand it: the footrim is canted or sloped on the old ones so its not perfectly flat. Is that true here? I.e. does this footrim have the canted (as I understand it, correct me if Im wrong) slope and does that shape apply to Ming ceramics? thanks so much

 

There were different types of footrims on Ming ceramics, canted, rounded and flat.

That eas an excellent overview. But pre 19thc it loks like foot rims can be clean or messy!
