    The images are so fine I can't tell painted or transfer?

    Could these be like those photo painting things, and instead of using paper they somehow printed a photo onto the plate and then painted over it?

    I wonder if they are hand painted over a transfer. Color photography didn't exist back then, but the transfer could have been made from a B&W photo and then colored over. I see dots at the edges, but when I blow up the pics it does look handpainted.

    I'm betting it was some sort of photo process with hand augmentation.

    That would explain some of the impressions I've had since these plates were posted. They look like commissioned portraits.
