Featured What Is a Cameo - NOT!

Whenever someone uses the descriptor "classy", you know they're not.

 

Yeah, and scarce/rare are often suspect too. I nearly choke each time I see one of those resin cameos I have written about elsewhere (the ones I refer to as 'Danbiere' for convenience) as rare. At least they really do qualify as cameos. Of late I keep running into purported definitions of 'cameo' that require stone or shell & 2 layers of color. OK coral, lava, glass, plastic, step out of line.

 

I actually meant that the person using the descriptor "classy" is not classy, but it works for the item, too.

 

This auctioneer is definitely not one of the classier sale rooms.

 

To bring this conversation around, the seller of this ring described the material of the cameo as operculum. I'm not entirely convinced, but I don't know that they were wrong either.



The truncation line looks a bit like tagua nut.

ahhh , the famous one hump cameo !!

 

Cameus dromedarius. I find it a bit creepy that it appears to be made of what is probably camel bone, like the camel is happy about that. I think some people use "cameo" as a synonym for "brooch."

 

I think some folks have no idea what they are talking about.......just trying to sell , sell , sell,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

It looks very surprised at being called cameo.

 

Maybe it's a camelo.
