Featured What Is a Cameo - NOT!

    Yeah, and scarce/rare are often suspect too. I nearly choke each time I see one of those resin cameos I have written about elsewhere (the ones I refer to as 'Danbiere' for convenience) as rare. At least they really do qualify as cameos. Of late I keep running into purported definitions of 'cameo' that require stone or shell & 2 layers of color. OK coral, lava, glass, plastic, step out of line.

    I actually meant that the person using the descriptor "classy" is not classy, but it works for the item, too. :rolleyes:

    To bring this conversation around, the seller of this ring described the material of the cameo as operculum. I'm not entirely convinced, but I don't know that they were wrong either.

    The truncation line looks a bit like tagua nut.

    Cameus dromedarius. I find it a bit creepy that it appears to be made of what is probably camel bone, like the camel is happy about that. I think some people use "cameo" as a synonym for "brooch."
