Featured Info on 1950's Ceramic-Top Coffee Table

Hi Folks-
A recent acquisition. Needs cleaned and spiffed up but quite nice to my eyes. Well marked but it doesn't help. Can't find any info on the makers. Seems too accomplished for an amateur effort. Any thoughts?

 

An amateur couldn't do that. But odd -- given names and location -- nothing about makers.

You know... I think I might call the reference desk at the local library. At the very least, they can check the telephone directory and (perhaps) the regional newspaper archive. (Flourtown is too small to have had its own press.)

Extremely cool piece, sophisticated MCM.Looks like a period piece that would've come out of Carmel or Cape Cod. Wonder what kind of bird that is ?

It's enamel on copper, so it could have been done by two talented amateurs with a big enough kiln. He did the woodwork, she did the copper?

 

Isn't the top ceramic?

The ceremony was performed by the Rev. George Vorsheim. There was a reception in the North Haven home of the bride's mother. Davies, sister-in-law of the bride. It would be an awfully thin piece of ceramic, possibly a prefab large tile. Copper would fit the period and the thickness of the tabletop.

 

It's ceramic. And heavy. That's great research about the misspelled name. I could see that card was not written by the makers but I hadn't considered a misspelling. The bird is a mystery.

 

The D-u-e-t-z does it. Entered the U.S. in 1939 at the age of 43. Dutch. Working for the Philadelphia Electric Company in 1942.

From the 1957 issue of Friends Journal. Craftspeople, as I thought. "Tile-top table." And wife is Gertrude, not Wilhelmina.

Ceramic mosaics and tiles set in table tops are also of the period.

 

Maybe Wilhelmina was his sister? Creative talents often run in families, and he could have married Gertrude who was equally talented.
