Featured Elegant Fish Art

Perhaps not at first, but by the second and third look this papier-mache fish evinces a subtle sophistication and unique vision that make it well worth the $2 I spent on it.


The well-executed lines, the complex interplay between complementary colors and the seemingly random 'dots', the many fins: they all just seem to, shall we say, flow together so well.


Diving even deeper, if I may, I sense a latent commentary on the suffocating weight of modern life, the endless feeding frenzy from which the only escape seems to be, paradoxically, to retreat ever deeper into the darkness of the abyss. (That might just be me though.)

Absolutely agree with your perceptive analysis. An artistic expression of existential angst much like Munch's masterwork.

Personally I don’t get any of the ‘perceptive analysis’ so not for my money. Just looks like amateur hour to me .. But it certainly catches the eye..

 

I think his post was tongue in cheek. If not, I just might have insulted his taste in "art".

I can't help but acquiesce to your insightful treatise.The fish as an archetypal Jungian symbol of our inner psyches plumbing the depths so to speak, of our innermost gestalt- is an eloquent embodiment of the 'Hero's Journey'.

Good times. Funny. Humor doesn't always come off so well on postings on Antiquers, because people politely assume you're in earnest, but that was fun. Thanks.

A couple years ago, my friend and I had a Christmas contest: we went into an antique mall together, with a $15 budget and the goal of picking the absolute ugliest thing we could find. Once we both found our item, we asked three other customers whose was worse. The loser had to buy the other person's 'uglier find' and then, even worse, had to keep it!

I lost. If only I'd had this fish at the time.
