Why did I always want one of these, and is it actually Art ? Can't answer either question- anyway I dig it.
It's 8" by 3" and maybe hung near an office or home's front door. It was suspended by a plate hook-20th century do-it-yourself 'know-how' !
    PS- Most importantly, who's 'S.J.Rodgers' at '1711' somewhere ?

I have one like that hanging by my front door as we speak. It's got the family last name on it and came from my dad's childhood home. The house was purchased in 1927 and the sign probably isn't much newer.

Dang Ruth-that's a true family treasure, from the era when many things were still hand-crafted.Now all signage is produced w/ computer guided lazer cutting out transfer letters.
PS- From the info I found these types of signs were fashionable between the late 19th century up into the 30's, fits your family history to a 'T'.

The plate hanger makes me chuckle. You can almost hear the man of the house-"Mildred, I aint spendin' 15 cents on no mounting hardware when we got this here !"
