Somebody paid you, and still got a good deal. Just try and find anything similar, made new, for those prices.

I think it was worth more, but as always, what we think something is worth and what it sells for is often two different amounts!

Yeah, but tricky height 73 cm, and they originally came in pairs. Bought for $100, but sat long before sold.

The value for pairs is often 4-10x. I have just bought a pair of empire Mahogny commodes c 1815 which is quite exciting given how rare it is for the pair to survive together!

Or even crazier: own one and find the other out in the wild. It's happened, but it's like hitting El Gordo. Congrats on finding the chest a good home.

Do you think that's the original upholstery?

Occasional chairs don't usually sell terrifically well here. What is the style and age of this pair? That low back would make for good posture -- no slouching!

If I saw those I'd think "dressing table chairs"; here those usually are low chairs with low backs. They're old and came as a pair, so they're something else. They almost have to have newer fabric; what's on their looks, from here, to be more 1950s than 1830s(?).

They are an unusual model, with sabre legs both front and back and a round seat. The backrest is somewhat puzzling, as its form leans more towards Biedermeier, while the rest of the construction is pure Empire.

The backrests may have been altered later in the 19th century by a professional cabinetmaker. Another possibility is that they were originally made as small, lightweight seats intended for larger reception or banqueting rooms. These were often produced in larger sets, sometimes 20–30 pieces at a time.

Ballrooms maybe? Women weren't tall in those days, my father's grandmother (born 1872-ish) was 5'-nothing when she was young. She wasn't unusual. The ballgowns had full skirts, often heavy. If the lady needed to take a breather, these would do nicely.
