Got my trip to the local flea market, found a nice home savings box issued by a Viennese bank, and spotted this on my way out in a box full of literally sand and seashells.

    Got no clue, 1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg 7.jpg 8.jpg 1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg 7.jpg 8.jpg but it was a 1 dollar no comment situation.

Wierd thing its small, only about 13 cm and the break looks old.

Beautiful savings box that. I have no real idea about the other but it made me thought of a large fish tank decoration. More knowledgeable members will know better.

    The box is beautiful.

Very cute model of an amphora. Afaik it is smaller than the usual smallest amphoras, but it could be as Boland said, a fish tank decoration.

I've got no expertise in amphorae, but I'm strongly on the side of genuine vs repop or aquarium decor. Much there isn't immediately obvious. That thing is worthy of serious, scholarly research, imo. Thanks!

Large for an amphoriskos. What type of material is under there? Pottery? Metal? Glass? Do the shells with it in the box of sand look like they were washed up on a beach or collected while the animal was alive? What other sorts of things was the seller offering? Heaven knows enough amphora of all sorts went down with the ships.

Pottery under the incrustation, there are some areas that i initially thought as some result of slime but i see a straight black line on the exposed handle. To my eye looks like directlly on top of the material and under the incrustation but not sure its pigment, could be slime as well.
Just weird it would be a straight line and down the middle.
12.7 cm, about 5 inches a better measurement.

No clues with the seller, nothing else even remotely interesting.
Box full of beach pickings, not something out of a net.

I got a bit addled on measurements. This one falls right in the range of a typical amphoriskos, used for oils, ointments, medicines.

    Too large.

Ill put some more pictures of the break, but its irregular, sharp angle on the left side and all around the edges are completely crusted over.

The one thing i dont like about it is inside the neck, there is a portion that is clean and feels smooth to the touch. Ill see if i can take a photo of it, need some better lighting.

Not sure its a clue but the walls seem thick for the size. About 0.5 cm all around the break.

I tried the obvious thing & found that Google Lens is completely stymied by the photos. Guess AI still has a lot to learn.

Well, there's precedent for that, y'know; an inch was the length of the King's thumb joint, an a dozen of 'em were coincidentally the same length as the old fools foot. Bound to be others...I've heard the south end of a northbound woman described as 2 axe handles an' a plug o' tobacco wide! Everyone knows how long a squirrel is, don't they?

And hands & ells & hectares. Much more fun than pedantic metric.

For us geriatrics, what we know allows reasonably error-free figuring. But y'always gotta convert to use Metric; we don't think in Metric. I like what I know.

Something red, something green , something blue and something blue and sparklly to muddy the waters even further )
Not sure what these deposits are but they are clustered only on that area, cant find anything similar on the rest of it.
    Anny ideas ?
    Circeled in red is the pottery surface. 1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg 4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg 7.jpg 8.jpg

Sorry for overdoing it with the pictures on this thread...
