Featured What Do You Think of This Piece? Chinese Red Jade Pendant?

This Pendant is available through a local on line auction. I thought it looked unusual and was interested in knowing more about it.

It's described as a Chinese Red Jade Pendant. No measurements are given (natch) but it looks fairly large. That's a woman's hand in the photo. This is the description verbiage:

"Beautiful Chinese round red jade jasper and white quartz stone pendant with silver-tone metal mounts, applied panther and butterfly motifs, and hanging bail."

So is it quartz or jade? The consigner called it Chicken Blood Stone. I won't be bidding on it because it looks too big and cumbersome to wear. But still curious about it.

Any thoughts?

 

Good. These pendants are a dime a dozen. They also come with a stone that resembles green jade. I have never had one in my hand, but given the fact that the metal is base metal, the stone may not be jade.

Chicken blood stone is generally not used for jewellery because it can be fragile.

"Although the quartz content has a high hardness of 7, clay and cinnabar have very low hardness (2-2.5). This variation makes working with this material quite challenging for lapidary artists."

Thanks so much, AJ! That's a very interesting and informative article. The auction ends tomorrow night and there are 7 different bidders. It won't get really going until the last few hours but bids are up to $11 as of now.

I put the photo in Google images (should have already done that) and found a green one exactly like this out of Louisiana for $885 described as antique and rare. Then I found 3 red ones on eBay from a seller in China who offered them for $35 each. The wonders of China, ehh?

Now I'm seeing them everywhere! LOL, since I googled it, they are pushing them at me. Glad I checked in with you first.

Ditto-the current mob in DC are small-time hucksters compared to China.China's been honing their strategies for thousands of years and they don't play global chess the way a 6 year does.

Antiques & Collectibles are in quite the quandary these days. You've got container ships of worthless knockoffs from China,and the vast majority of true antiques being ignored by (much of) the young 'new' wealth.
I just can't motivate my old bones to get enthused about sports memorabilia & Pokemon cards.

 

I had a couple of the green ones a number of years ago now. The metal is very soft & the stone struck me as dyed chalcedony (quartz). Think they were a few dollars each, about what they're worth.

 

In case you're interested, this pendant sold for $65 ($79.95 with buyer's premium and sales tax).

 

The buyer hasn't done their homework.

 

I almost hope they don't find out. I wouldn't have paid US$5.
