I don't know about you, but I thought that at this stage of the game there were no cameo glass deals to be found. But I went to a large Midwestern U.S. antique show this past weekend and found this 10" x 3.5" Galle footed vase for a steal! I know that the vendor knew what it was, but had it priced to sell anyway.
Galle has been heavily copied, and the real deal can still bring in good money. It's been years since I found a genuine piece at a good price, but it can still happen. Keep the faith!!

That you bought it in the midwest doesn't surprise me. It's been copied so much that everyone here just assumes that it's all faked and people don't really have the eye to know which is real or not real. So they just walk right by it, "oh it's fake, they all are". As a dealer that can mean you have to sell the genuine pieces for a lot less, unless you want to collect it yourself.

When I was still going to live auctions, there was at least one fake Galle vase and one fake Roseville pottery piece at every auction. I wondered at the time if this was just where it was all dumped. Pilgrim glass made some very nice cameo glass pieces on their popular cranberry glass blanks that brought good prices. I just bought a vase recently for $5. I wanted it for myself, but sad to see how low the price was and it was signed too. The vase brings diddly on eBay but I like it.

So you did well @Ghopper1924. You landed a real one in the wild. Did it sigh in relief to now be among other genuine antiques?

Thanks for all of your knowledgeable input, @ola402 . I think that you've described the situation pretty well. It was fun to find the "real deal" in the wild so to speak, and of course even better to find it at a good price. I understand that usually Galle is at the top of the price list for cameo, if you can find it at all.
The piece is now living on a rosewood etagere by J and J Meeks from the 1850s, in company with other cameo by De Vez, Richard, Legras, and Arsall. If it didn't breathe a sigh of relief, at least it now knows that its not out there in the company of fakes and ripoffs anymore. :)

Finding real Galle hiding in plain sight sounds like a Ghopper chortling all the way home.
