Featured Bronze Vase

Good morning all:

Found this bronze vase last weekend. It measures about 19" x 14" U.S., and weighs in at a heavy 5-10 pounds. It's bronze finished in a deep plum color, with the foot and crown finished in gilt. The decorations include gold lily pads, a putto and a dragonfly. Because of the mix of Renaissance Revival and Art Nouveau imagery, I'm dating it to ca. 1890.

It was purchased from the estate of an old family in a medium-sized river city here in the U.S. Midwest. The provenance is that it originally came from France and was purchased new. The price when it left the family about 15 years ago was 2.5 times what I paid.

There are no marks on the bottom of the vase, except for a period screw that holds the foot on. If any of you have a clue as to who might have made it, I'd appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Thanks!

It is like those, Debora. How odd that both of them are so damaged, including the loss of the dragonfly. Still, it would be nice to have a second one!

 

They'd be very impressive as a pair. And interesting how widely dispersed they are -- the UK and Russia.

Yes, that is gorgeous and I would seriously have lusted after it! Does look oh so French!
