Featured Destiny Comes Calling

We have our set schedule for the week. There's a town we pass that I always want to stop at. 25 or 30 years ago (long before we lived in PA) I saw a painted moon and cow clock that I loved. Surprisingly that year my wife bought me nothing for Christmas. But, out of that exact place she bragged about buying her brother a piece that he loved. I eventually found one like it in an antique store and bought it for myself.

Since we were through everything early today, I thought we'd go to that shop and see if they had anything. It didn't. But, when we pulled into town, an antique (junk) place had a going out of business sign. A lot of their garbage was thrown on the front lawn. I picked up a signed etching for a dollar. My wife found 7 pins/lockets for $3 each. We got there after 2pm. They were probably open since 9am. So, a lot of people picked through this stuff. There were over 15 people while we were there. These are four of the seven.

This looks like a suffragette piece.

This is marked 14k. So chances are good those are diamonds. I'm sure the carat weight is nothing. But, $3.

This is also marked 14k. Look at the clasp. Those might be real pearls.

This has an XVII etched into it. It might be junk. But, it's NOT. Look at the photo.


The other three pieces are also very nice.

Upstairs of this place I found this print. It was just for show when the store was open. I wanted to pay $5. They said $10. I put it back. My wife came up and liked it, so I bought it. It's an etching (I think) of Franz Lefler's - The Marriage of Amor. It's in a beautiful frame. We'll be hanging it.

 

Absolutely beautiful locket, and the other jewelry not too shabby either! What a deal!

 

Wonder if it was ever used as a book illustration. Drawn from the story of Cupid & Psyche, I imagine.

In the glyptics world this is most often given the title The Marriage of Cupid & Psyche, although current scholarship has other ideas about the original intentions.

 

OK I need to know where in PA they are selling gold jewelry for $3! We went to the bins in Reading today and there was no gold there, just insane scavengers

The place is going out of business. I know 4 town names for sure "Perkasie" where I live. Sellersville, Doylestown (hoity toity), and Quakertown which are the next towns depending on which direction you go. This town is on Rte 73. We made a left off Rte 113 and it was not far down. We drive 113 every Wednesday, and have never stopped in the years we've lived here. She really lucked out. She does have very good taste in jewelry and clothing. She was a textile designer for the same company, 33 years.

Scavengers is being kind. I've encountered people in PA that I've never seen on Long Island, NYC, and New Jersey. It's bizarre.

I showed that pin to AI after I made this post, and it also mentioned that the lack of green signified it wasn't suffragette, but that it was from that period. It's a sentimental/romantic piece. It's great either way. I was always told that purple stone with symbols around it were for the movement. They just forgot to mention the green.

Wow, what great finds!

In the US, the suffragette colors were purple, white, and gold. No green.

I'm seeing H A I, but not necessarily in that order.
I see the H with a long horizontal bar and the two vertical bars on each side of the piece. The A and the I are in the center of the piece. (That's just how my eyes are interpreting the engraving. )

 

That’s incredible! It shocks me that sellers miss those small little marks on jewelry, or that no one had purchased the pieces by the time you got there.

If the bar pin is 14k, those are real pearls. It looks like it dates to about 1910, and that point they may even be natural instead of cultured. If so...BINGO. How people missed those I've no idea, but you didn't!
