Chris, it's impressive that you received such a detailed reply to your inquiry!

I'm still awfully sorry that you didn't get the image you purchased.

Wow, I'm also impressed with the level of assistance you were given.

Many "prints" prior to the 1880s or so were actually book plates. It wasn't until the late 19th century when new printing processes reduced the cost of production that large numbers of stand-alone prints were published.

I think there are 3 or 4 volumes, but I believe it's in nr 2. I have emailed a bookseller that has it to check.

And, yes, I did get a refund. But that does not make much of a difference!

Oh, and if I were to take the route of printing the image (the one that was linked to in the book, is actually quite a high resolution image) - Does anyone know what kind of (linen?) paper and printer technology is preferred? Are there services you have used to make such reproductions? Would a good inkjet photo printer do the job?

When I was doing banners for my Relay For Life team, I took them on a disc to an office printing service.....they would do ANYTHING!!!! Great job!! ANY size!!! Just be sure you get a preview first.....I'm sure they can enlarge it to a nice framable (sp?) size with no loss of definition! If you opt to do it yourself, I personally would NOT go with a glossy paper.....a GOOD quality Matte photo paper or ask about other options on other kinds of paper......BUT....if you're going to try to enlarge it yourself, it's tricky even with great photo or graphics editing software, and not losing definition......for something that small, I personally would take it to a printing company and see what they can do!!!! Good luck with whichever. Also, if you download the image again, save it as a "~name.tiff".....that's a 'lossless' format.....should maintain all the qualities of the image.....if anyone else has other or better info to suggest......suggest away!!!:happy::happy:

No, but it takes a tiny bit of the sting away:grumpy:

To get a good printed copy, a digital image's resolution needs to be at least 300px (pixels per inch). The more pixels per inch, the better the results will be at larger sizes.

As Aquitaine said, you might want to take the file to a professional printer to get the best results. Even a regular photocopy shop might be able to give you a good quality print.

This episode is now starting to become surreal.

I ordered the book from a bookseller that had it. Today it arrived.
See my email to the bookseller below.

    Dear Graham,

Thank you for sending the book so quickly. It arrived today.

But my almost impossible bad luck with this print continues. It is the wrong book! The print on page 218, that I asked you to check, is NOT the print I am looking for.

The London Metropolitan Archives response said it was Volume 2 I needed. When in fact it turns out it’s Volume 1. I did inquire about Volume 2, and so it is my fault. I did also ask you to check the print against the link to the page in question (see previous emails), but apparently I was not clear in asking you to make sure it was actually the right print. You only checked the quality of the print, which is, I am now realizing, all I explicitly asked for.

    This is quite incredible.

I am not sure how to proceed. Do you happen to also have Volume 1, and would be willing to exchange the one I have for the one I actually want?

    With all my best,
    Chris

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Chris, I'm very sorry to hear of the disappointment with the one (now two) items that you purchased!

Looking at the ones on AbeBooks, I notice that one of the more descriptive listings says the following: "Illustrated with upwards of 200 steel engravings from original drawings and Daguerreotype, including folding frontispieces." -- It is a possibility that the original of your print was photographic in nature, or it could have been a drawing.

    Hi Chris,

I came across this discussion while I was looking into some prints I bought in a job lot at auction. I have a copy of the Highbury Crescent print, reasonable condition, quite nicely framed. My not particularly accurate measuring has it as 14cm x 10cm. It looks to me like it could have come from a book. Happy to scan and send for you to have a look at.

Hi Bleu-Belle! Thanks for reaching out! It seems I have finally located the right volume of the book, but is your print colored? And are you willing to sell it? If so, please do scan/photograph and show me! If you want to do it over email it's chris [at] momentagency [dot] com
