    Hi Everyone,
I have a small carved glass or rock crystal foo dog that has another material attached on the top, possibly carved from a single piece of glass/crystal that had an inclusion? The red top material has white underneath, almost like a polished shell. Does this look familiar? Any ideas? The little figure measures just 2" long. There are a few chips on its feet. It came with a lot of antique Chinese items. I'm thinking it is old, possibly late 19th century.

Charming Fu lion. It is carved Peking glass, imo. The red colour probably means it was made as a New Years gift.

The white & red look applied to me, sort of pate-sur-pate. This is an example of a stone that has red, white & colorless layers:

I asked google to describe the process used to make the fu lion and it said that the glass artisan, after he was finished carving the clear glass figure, dipped the clear glass into molten white glass then dipped in red and when they dried, he carved into the colors, exposing the white beneath the red. It was an advanced glass making process introduced to the Chinese in the early 1700s, brought to China by European Jesuit missionaries.

Google was right, that is how it was made. With Peking glass it is called overlay. I have snuff bottles like that, some have five colours.
