I think it's beautiful. Maybe Wemyss? Frankly, looks better than the few Wemyss I saw on a quick search.

 

Thanks! Given the collection it came from, it would not surprise me if this ends up being a Joseph Nekola Sr. original from the late 1800s. But let me not get ahead of myself, or the experts.

 

Certainly looks like Wemyss or at least in the style of.

Maybe you could contact them and ask. Could be from the earlier period. Just a guess. I believe it's much copied.

I thought so, too, but doubtful since a Chinese expert from one of the big auctions didn't bite.

 

What is its history? I asked my partner what his first impression was. "A cheap Chinese slip cast copy"

 

I think it has character, but that's no guarantee of originality.

 

It came from a rare collection I purchased a while back; I will tell the story if it turns out to do well at market.

 

I think part of the charm is the shape of the figurine, but part of it is also the naivete of the painting, but that may be what works against it being Wemyss. Finding other old pieces online and comparing how the roses are painted may be sufficient to answer the question.

Not Wemyss, base is all wrong, so is the shape - but it's reminiscent. The ears would be straight, usually pink inside, not out, as they look there. The glaze is too grayish and dull looking. Wemyss used a very shiny white glaze. Also, Wemyss roses are much more exuberant: the decoration quality simply isn't there on this bunny. I've some Plichta pieces which I'm rather fond of.

I think he's Asian, too - the shape with the bum in the air is very Chinese. Not modern, neccesarily.
