Featured Lovely MCM walnut(?) marble table - who made it?

    My parents bought this table in the early 1960s. It measures 24" across the top, and 25 1/2" high. It is now mine, heh, heh, heh. I've never examined it closely before - it's always been in a corner of the living room with a lamp and an ashtray on it.
    I can't find any marks on it. There are penciled numbers on the pieces that make up the top of the stand, and a penciled number on the bottom of the marble.
    What do you think? Home made? Made in a small shop? By a known designer?
    Thanks for any help.
    BTW, please forgive the dirt. This room opens to the dirt/gravel driveway. :oops:

    Although way out of my area of interest, i don't think home built, the machined parts on underside are very precise followed by a band of veneer, I'd guess either walnut or rosewood.

    Thanks James.

    Greg - do you mean the raised edge? I thought that was unusual. The marble is so glossy it looks like glass.

    Wait a minute - is it possible this is glass? There is absolutely no grain showing on the top - it's just smooth glossy white. But then again, it has what looks like grain on the bottom.

    It could very well be glass, milk glass? with the bottom grooves made from the mold glass was poured into.

    So rather than that being grain on the bottom, could it be staining from the wood stain process?

    Yep could be or, it could be glue/epoxy to keep the top on if it's attached.

    Sure you can wash it, they have compounds/cleaners that are supposed to take stains out as well, dunno if they work.
    Marble/ granite are quite porous which is why you must constantly seal kitchen countertops if you want to keep them looking new, unlike quartz which is a maintenance free man made stone.

    Hi,
    Quartz has to be maintained not as much but it keeps it from chipping. That much glass on that table would have been more expensive than marble to make. So either way it was an expensive piece in it's day.

    Maybe Vitrolite glass.
    I know Paul McCobb tables have Vitrolite tops, yours isn’t McCobb but...

    The gem tester can tell you if it is stone vs. glass I think :)

    I had this Vitrolite whiskey sign a few years ago, had that same texture on the back side that the underside of your table has.
