I purchased this wool blanket about ten years ago for two reasons: I found it to be aesthetically appealing and practical. At the same time, it cost no more than any other blanket.

I would appreciate some guidance related to who created it and approximate age. It measures 56” x 84” with a vertical seam down the middle. Thanks so much.

I purchased at auction in Chicago nine or ten years ago. I have had it in cedar chest since that time. So much for the practical consideration. Lol. We moved the chest today and I realized that I placed the blanket in there with a Japanese flag and a silk kimono.

I can see some resemblance. I assume the width of 56” is double the standard loom size. I paid $59 inclusive of buyers premium back then before the auction house went online. Like I said, I originally thought of it as a practical solution to cold winter nights. Thanks for your research!

It's Mexican, a variation of the traditional Texcoco pattern, named for the region where it originated, northeast of Mexico City.

I would say it's mid-20th century, based on similar ones I've seen from that time period.

Problem with trying to identify from the internet, is that often these are misidentified, and other web sites (worthpoint especially) then repeat the misidentifications on their own pages.

Whenever you see stripes on the ends, with this white border containing black symbols surrounding a center with variations of diamond shapes, it's considered the Texcoco design pattern.

The twisted tassels in the corners, and the fact that it is woven in two pieces, is an indication it was made in Mexico. Chimayo weaving will have a fringe across the ends, not a tassel in the corners.

Thank you, Taupou. This is wonderful information. I assume very modest value and probably best just to use as originally intended.
