Hello! I bought this about 10 years ago at a Goodwill in Idaho for $10. I have handled a lot of Ivory in the past so I am pretty sure it is Ivory. It has cross hatching on the little removable door but the rest of the piece is quite textured and hard to show the hatching. It also has quite a bit of weight. It stands about 6" tall and is glued to the wooden base (maybe glued by previous owner?) It has a small signature on the removable door. I was wondering if anyone could identify the maker or date? I think it is Japanese but it might be Chinese. It's so delicately carved and made I wonder if it is something special :) Thank you so much for your time in advance!

Don't want to seem skeptical as you have experience handling ivories, but the siggie doesn't look carved, but more like it was molded?

I just mean it doesn't seem to have any sharp edges the way a cut sig would have?

It's a shame you can't get the cross hatching to show.
If this is an old piece, it sure is mighty white.

    Lovely all the same.

A beauty for $10.00, but agree with Blooey and Cluttered.

The edges are very sharp and even the little door is uneven one side is thicker than the other. I don't know what a siggie is? I googled the word but that did not help. Are you talking about the little hill? It looks rounded but they textured the hill with little stipple like marks. My light may have been to bright to see the sharpness. The leaves on the tree are nearly paper thin at the points.

I agree it is quite white/ cream colored but I think that might have to due with it always being covered by a dome? So really no handling or air maybe? Plus my light may have been to bright. Any other ivory I have if it was a heavily touched item like a utensil handle it is yellow-ish but brooches and jewelry tend to be whiter I assumed because it was less touched.

A siggie is a signature. Believe this was in reference to the mark you showed.

Based on color alone...I'd guess not ivory, unless it was carved not too much more long ago than when you bought it. It's so very white. Also if it were ivory I'd expect that large flat surface of the underside of the base to show the schrager lines.... can you show a picture of the underside?
