Friends, these potentially amber beads, they seem to have a coating of a shellac type material....would that be likely do you think?

They could be plastic,as ever I am clueless..they are very lightweight
This is one of the strands...they are dry in appearance and have a coating which is flaking off

They both look like pressed amber to me. The first one is very dry, that is why it looks like a coating. You can rub some olive oil on the beads, and they will look beautiful again.
The flaking could be chipping, from the beads being knocked together. Keep them in a soft textile bag or wrap them in a soft cloth.:)

I've seen butterscotch go like that. It's basically dried out on the surface. It would need a repolish or some of @kyratango 's insect wax on it.

They're worth about eight times their weight in gold. I sold a VERY tatty string for a friend a few years back, who though it junk. Seven hundred quid.

I actually do think it's a coating,at least on the smaller but longer one...I can pull it off ( I HAVEN'T :) ) but I do think it has shellac on it xx
    ADDING...now I'm not so sure

Art Deco Baltic amber beads are often matte, not shiny. They preferred them that way. The amber will love oil though.:playful:

Don't laugh, but you can also use your hair oil to bring things back. Rubbing beads on unwashed locks!

Hey, my ma used to wear her real pearls whilst vacuuming. Under her shirt, next to the skin, brought them up a treat!
