(Wasn't sure where to whack the box, here or "antiques" but thought I'd keep it all here) xxx

Was this a tea caddy and someone's decoupage'd it?! It has a varnish that's gone over everything, even the brass on top outside)
(Not even sure if it's an old one)
It's six inches across the top, just over four inches down) ( is that enough measurements? I always think there's three but can only think of up/down  )

JMHO but it looks like a 19th century tea caddy to me. Can you see any remnants of a foil lining? It’s really pretty, and nice to put pretty things in now:)

Really nice, Bou, and I agree, 19th century. Probably a Welsh tea caddy, with those Prince of Wales's feathers on two sides. Decoupage was a lady's pastime in those days.
It has had a life, but it's still a sweet box.:)

THat's Georgian and I think late 18th into early 19th. Smaller the caddy, the older it is. The top motif is typical, as are the swags. Lovely escutcheon.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Or maybe sometime in it's life it got very wet to do that damage to the varnish, but it's still a nifty box to hold some of your treasures!!!!:happy::happy:

Thank you all again...am very happy :)

I am 20 miles from Wales so maybe that's pertinent?

I would think so.:) Things travel worldwide, but with the feathers and it being so close to Wales makes a strong case for Welsh.;)

I agree, older. The fanned oval is a dead-giveaway. Over here, we'd call it "Federal"style. Really pretty little find!

There's a word for that oval and I have totally forgotten it.

Right? That's why they call it RE-search! I've resorted to little paper brains on everything.
