Featured Native? Baby Basket

    Hi All,
    Not mine, asking for a friend. The basket is 17"L x 10.5"W x 6"H, she isn't sure if straw or grass.
    Any information appreciated.

    thank-you komokwa:) I was trying to find my basket book but no luck. so not native then, somewhere tropical? other than the material, is the base a clue that not native?

    I agree, not Native American. The similar ones I've seen were made in Mexico, from palm fiber, like the one shown in April's post.

    This appears to be palm fiber, but it doesn't look like it was made for actual use, based on the size, and since the little sun shade looks very impractical, as well as being not very well-constructed. Mexican ones are generally better made. The weaving technique also differs from the typical Mexican type.

    Since it doesn't exactly fit the expected standards, it very well could have been made by an anonymous craftsperson, who had access to the palms, and attempted to make a fairly common style of traditional basket. But I would suspect the Philippines or other Asian country as the source, based on the construction technique.

    I don't think in Mexico this is an original design, looks more like they follow the ecological trend using local palm-weaving techniques. The weaving on the photos on question looks different and not Mexican, I also think so.
