Just saw a beautiful ceramic piece by Deck in Houseful's thread.

I hope you can help me with this!! I know we don't do $ estimates, but the one in the other thread sold for significantly more than estimated, a rare trick these days. Come on, give me your best $ shot! I don't even want to sell it, I just want an idea of it's dollar value. :)

Attributed to Theodore H. Deck. Signed "H" underneath (his middle initial) as well as stamped "B & Gs/Depose/Greil et Montserrat" within a vase design. The last word is smeared. Presumably that was the seller? The jardiniere is ceramic trimmed in bronze, with elephant head feet. I would date it to ca. 1880. It is 18" long x 11" wide x 11" tall. Quite heavy:

GHopper, I know absolutely nothing about the item you've shown here, but I just want to say that it's EXQUISITE!

    It is now....:)

Or I should say, it wasn't until I bought it for a (relative) song just because I loved it. I'm getting a feeling that it's a sleeper, but can scrape together very little information. The other thread about Theodore Deck gave me hope.

I found another - the description may explain some.
"it is signed by the artist on the front bottom, "G. Lemonnier". It dates from the mid to late 19th century and it is in great condition with no damage whatsoever. It was originally all gilt bronze on the mounts but it is very worn now and only traces of the gilt bronze still exist leaving the aged patina. I believe this piece was made in the factory in Houry, France. "

If I'm understanding correctly. It appears the artist is G. Lemonnier. Doesn't say who made the ceramic.
The Foundry may be Houry in France.
I can't find any reference to a foundry by the name of Houry.

Like lamps, I imagine a foundry would sell bases or rims to whatever company would be willing to purchase such. Therefore you may find the metal bases used on different pottery works. The pottery would most likely not have the abiltiy to pour metal.

Oh I miss not having md1919's help on this board.
They were really good. I asked them to join this board when it started up, but they stayed with ebay.
Wonder if they are still posting.

Anyway more support for the pottery company.

Again let me repeat I know nothing about this pottery, I'm just trying to put the pieces together.

What I see, and I could be wrong, I'm willing to be corrected.

The pottery is made by Barluet and Cie, Creil & Montereau
The decorator we don't really know, unless Ghopper can find a signature on the bowl somewhere.
The patinated bronze appears to be made by Houry. Of which so far I haven't found support for.

    Question
Why is there different style "H"'s on the 3 similar pieces found so far.

    Brief Bio of Deck

Some of his work - other than the Asian influence, I'm not seeing a similarity.

Wow, thanks for all of your good work! I thought Deck came in because of the "H," his middle initial and the stylistic similarities to other examples of his work. I'll have to read all of your links.

OK, so it looks like these people made the jardiniere: Barluet and Company, Creil et Montereau

This mysterious entity may have made the bronze mountings: Houry

I can find no signature for the painting. The subject matter and style are certainly reminiscent of Deck's Asian-influenced work, but without a signature I wouldn't call it.

That's how I see it as well.
More research is obviously needed. Maybe a look into the artists of Barluet and Co.

    Good luck.
