The material might be gauze. They've been painting on the stuff for millennia.

"Copy of Qing Teng Lao Ren's original." QTLR aka Xu Wei.

Paintings are usually treasured in China. They don't ordinarily look as if they were accidentally dropped in a vat of soy sauce. Unless it was no accident.

Thank you khl889. I fully understand what you mean. I keep in my mind that it's a fake or copy. To me it looks like the paper was white in rhe beginning and the background has been painted brown which has faded and maybe spread to the borders.

Do you maybe have the link of the original works by this artist? Would like to see these. Had a look at the artist you mentioned but his works all have different seals and couldnt find a match neither the original works? Thank you

You can always Google his Chinese name 徐渭 on Google Images.

Thank you KHL. I'm already doing this and using all options but no result of similair seals or works. Ok so you said its a copy of Xu Wei original works. How do you come by this? I know it is/was common practice to replicated old masters. Can you give me maybe more info or website links that support this. If it's a copy, who made it than. Which artist and period?

No, I didn't say it was a copy. In quotes I gave you a word-for-word translation of what the relevant part of the inscription says. Who knows what it really is. Particularly since we can't really see it.
