I believe this is a sardine box. It is, I think, a silverplated box frame, with a porcelain insert. It measures 4 1/2" by 8" by 5".

Both the metal and the porcelain insert are marked, but I haven't been able to figure them out.

    Please help!

Bit large and utilitarian looking for a sardine box, can't recall seeing one with a hinged lid, and have a hard time imagining why you'd lock up sardines...

I was just wondering why anyone would need that much space for sardines!

Never heard of a sardine box. Live and learn. Whatever it is, it is pretty.

But did you find any so large, or with hinged lids, or a hasp & staple? Sardine boxes were pretty items, intended for table service, and made to fit a can of sardines...

Yeah, but those are much smaller - 8 inches is twice the dimension of those in the link

Does anyone recognize either of the marks? Maybe they can help determine what it's for.

Was pretty sure it was German, but just couldn't place it (blaming my failing memory on Covid19).

    Good finds, Peggy!

Was wondering if it was some sort of lunch-box with that handle, would think the porcelain would serve as insulation (with the sort of high metal top, perhaps originally had an interior lid?)...

I realized that was probably the case after I posted it...
