I picked this up today and can't quite figure it out. What is going on with this stick pin? The white gold portion with the diamond is very nice and can't be original to whatever it is attached to? Also, there is dried up glue... what was attached to it? Should I cut the white portion off and attach it to another stick? Any ideas?

Looks original to me ? The white gold is too carefully attached to not be part of the original design. The way the white top is arched seems like it held whatever was in that space.

I think you may be right! I just wonder what was there before... and what I should do with it now

Looks like Hailey's comet, a common theme in jewelry during those times.

It looks like the pearl is missing. You see there is a post that the pearl was glued to.....
Perhaps a pear shaped Mabe pearl.
Also, it looks like a nice old cut diamond. I can't quite tell if it is Old Mine or Old European, or something in between

Pearl makes sense as from The Pearl and Diamond Store!

Totally original! Only lacking either a pearl or a bi-domed cabochon of ornamental stone (tiger eye, lapis, coral....).
    Perfect kyratisation candidate:):joyful:

Comet tail/space dust would go with the pearl suggestion.

It is a beauty, just missing a pearl or cab. Please don't hurt it.:inpain::facepalm:
When you see a little bare prong on a piece of jewellery it is most likely missing a stone.

I will look for a pearl for it! Where shall I look though? It measures roughly 8mm in length and 5mm at the widest width.

Send it to kyra; she does marvels with aluminum foil. :D

Seriously, I think it was probably originally a pearl, & no doubt you will be able to find many pearls for sale. Finding one the right size & shape...not so easy. Keep an open mind about what you would like to see there. Maybe kyra could make you a nice faux opal.

Yes, check etsy. If there is a gem/mineral store in your vicinity, try there, too. You need a "half drilled" pearl.
There are several pearls choices. Akoya pearls are from salt water, and will be a bit more expensive.
Freshwater pearls are much more common, and you can probably get several for only a few dollars.
If the width of the cup shaped recess is 5mm, then I would say to get a 5mm and a 6mm pearl. Freshwater pearls are cheap. Get both, just to see which one will look right. When you get it, hopefully the hole in the pearl will fit the post properly. Just use some superglue to pop it on, and your stickpin will be perfect again!
    @kyratango, what do you think?

Agree. I would use hypocement though, it has a very thin syringe-like nozzle, so less chance of blobs of glue all over the pin or the pearl.

I just figured spartcom probably has superglue at the house.
I'm trying to be easy on him! You have to apply superglue like a surgeon when dealing with jewelry!

From what I see, the missing element was secured with a tiny short stem on BACK, not on the bottom.
Half drilled pearls won't fit IMHO.
Need to get exact measure of the empty cup and approximate depth needed.
Even a flat back drop like this could take place with some filling of the cup:):
