    I'd say it's commemorative of the Franco-Prussian war. The choice of lid seems a bit strange.

    Looks like an unfinished test run stein with a risque top added.

    The flag is lying down??? Pretty hard to tell for me to figure out the stein.... the color....has it been roughly fired once and burned??? And what's that first initial in the pewter lid.....second I see as M.....LOVE the LID!!!!!

    A great find and will do well in the German market. The lid is absolutely correct as a memento to the man at war or the lover left behind as a "remember me". here is a link with plenty to browse :http://militaryauction.org/c/Lidded-Steins_40041

    The moldings are somewhat poor quality so could it be folk art rather than commercially made?

    I would think this was a professional production, but not a particularly successful cast from the mold.
