Over coffee one morning I mentioned to my mom that I would like to put together something from each family member in sort of collage that I could display. No expensive things, just meaningful. The next time I saw her she had this small box that had some jewelry in it and said that it was for my collage. I thanked her but never asked "why" it was meaningful to her and for that I will always kick myself because we lost her shortly after.
I am sure it doesn't have monetary value because we were small farmers. But it is very pretty. I know nothing about jewelry. I was thinking of framing it in a shadowbox and was wondering how I would go about doing that. What kind of backing and how do I attach the jewelry to it. It is also missing some of the little rhinestones (?) that I would like to replace. What exactly are these stones called so I know what to look for? Any light you could shine on what era these are from. Thanks in advance. Sherri

What a lovely idea! And what pretty things. Those are both 1950s which may help you identify why they would have been important to your mother. Others sure to be along shortly to answer your questions more knowledgeably than I can.

That help Debora. Maybe her graduation as she was born in 1941. Although she wasn't wearing it in her graduation picture. But it is a start! Thanks

Those are too fancy for a nice young girl to wear to a high school graduation in that era. (Pearls would have been more appropriate. In fact, they would most likely have been mandatory!) More likely prom wear.

These sets were the sort of thing adult women wore to parties in the later 1950s/early 60s. Aurora borealis (AB) is the term for these iridescent stones.

She was wearing a double strand of pearls in her senior photo

If I may mention one resource for stone replacement that my wife has used with good results: Rhinestone Rosie; I'm sure you can find her on the internet. She's based in Seattle but she does work via mail.
Others may well have additional resources.

Our resident jewellery restoration genius is @kyratango If a stone cannot be found, she may have ideas for how you could disguise the gaps with nail polish & some kind of coating to get the iridescence. You never know.

Alas, no ideas for mimicking Aurora Borealis rhinestones... For attaching pieces to a shadowbox (brilliant idea for your display!) backing, I'd cut a packing cardboard piece, either paint it or cover with paper or fabric, glued, then sew the jewellery with some stitches of fishing line.:)

Fishing line...what a great idea! That is what I will do!. I forgot that I have a frame that was my grandmothers that has convex glass front that I think I will use instead of a modern shadowbox.

I found a set of earrings with the AR rhinestones for sale that I am watching that appear to be the same size.

Thanks for all of the help on this. So excited to get started. If anyone is interested I will post pics when done.

So I found a necklace that was missing some stones (I hated to ruin a perfectly good necklace) and the seller listed as a Lisner as well! Looks like the same clasp and dangle. So possibly the stones will be the same size. Wheels are in motion!!!
