Featured silver? spoon & seaglass beach finds

a few nice beach finds i found today

im hoping the spoon might be silver hallmarks looks interesting

might be nothing. would think it would only have any worth if it was old old

was all the colour of the cup part when i found it, been beaten up badly by the sea

some nice sea glass pieces i thought id share as well

 

Your fiddle back spoon doesn't appear to have the sterling hallmarks but could be pewter or plate. Not sure if there was a mark for coin other then 'COIN'. I LOVE the sea glass!!!! WE are packing up and heading down to our beach house in Dauphin Island Alabama. We were just hit by Hurricane Sally so we are on a clean up mission. I would love to find some sea glass!!!!

That's usually a good time to find it when things have been moved around a bit

They are called reverse gemstones, created by man, formed by nature

the lime piece would make a lovely cuff bracelet as well

 

Love the sea glass as well! I think your spoon says something, something & Co. Possibly something like this. It's not an exact match though.

the eye looking ones lovely, but you can only see it properly when held up to the light

 

Marks resemble Elkington perhaps?

 

My question about the spoon is, “Where did it come from?” If you can determine the spoon’s age you’ll be able to look at a list of shipwrecks off the coast and possibly identify which ship it was on. Might be an interesting historical find.

I'll certainly look into that, Appledore where I live has alot of rich history in that sort of thing

The hallmark is very odd, I had to scour it with a knife at first, then abrasive to get to anything readable, so would be surprised if it's a plated spoon

Don't even know which way round to read the hallmark

 

From what I'm reading, the fact that it is a two part constructed spoon, is a sign that it's quite old

Don't know how that fits in with the shape/style of it

Don't know if spoons were ever made later on in two parts ?

Can't help with the mark on the spoon, but how interesting. Keep researching.

Really love the glass. What will you do with it? I could see filling a clear jar and setting in the window. You found some really pretty pieces!

i had written it off before, but youve made me think about it now

 

The spoon is English electroplate, maybe on Britannia-metal, made by Edwin Blyde & Co. of Sheffield, the 'spur' mark is distinctive. Would date no earlier than the early 1870s,, when the firm started using the '& Co.' name (they are still in business as pewterers, the origins of the family business) - it is not two-part construction, suspect the 'drop' on the bowl-back is what makes you think that, and the fiddle pattern is a classic, many forms still in production, a plain fiddle with shoulders like yours would have originally dated to around 1800.

Great research, Dragonfly! Since the company still exists I’d be tempted to contact them, just for fun. Who knows, if they’re big enough they may even have a dedicated historian for the business, since it has been around so long.

The forum link below the image notes that when the owner of the catalog contacted the firm hoping for information on when they produced electroplate, the response was, "sorry too many years ago to have any details"
