Featured Antique Nippon in need of minor repair.

This is a vase that I bought thirty years ago and part of the reason I collect Nippon.
Stands 8 1/2" tall x 6" wide.
Completely hand painted.
The Nippon Maple leaf mark. From 1891 to 1920.
But the chunk broken off the top keeps reminding me why i now never buy damaged pieces. i thought that since the damage was in the gold area it could be fixed and touched up with gold leaf?
wishful thinking? I still love it and would never sell it.

Ouch......is it worth it to you to have it restored??? It IS BEAUTIFUL!!!

 

Mikey, that is a beautiful piece of Nippon. Only you can decide if it is worth the cost to have repaired and still make a $ if you sell it.

Thank you all. No I bought it chipped. The beauty of it outweighed the damage then. Still does now.

Hi Mikey,
Fill the area in with a mixture of corn starch and white glue and check out different gold colors in the store. It will look a lot better.

Thanks Greg, I might try it. My brother has a little air brush and says it would be perfect for the gold leaf paint.

A restoration would likely cost in the $150.00 and up range. Here's a link to a restorer (b.t.w. I never used them) that graciously also shares info on how to do it yourself http://www.lakesidepottery.com/

I've never tried any of the techniques, but always thought it would be fun to try, especially on pieces I wasn't going to be reselling.

If you enjoy the piece, I would suggest you don't need to feel it needs to be restored to have value. If you enjoy the artistry and aesthetics of it, maybe it's perfect the way it is . - Joe

 

@916Bulldogs123, Mikey....I'd bet you could do it!!!! Their lessons look VERY THOROUGH!!!!! Just looked a couple over!!!! A nice winter project!!!
