Featured HELP WITH LARGE HAND PAINTED MASK; MARDI GRAS?

    Found this beauty today - it measures 22" H x 17" W and is made out of cardboard? or paper mache? (it feels like the old fashioned egg containers that held a dozen eggs you got at the grocery store)

    Anybody know what it is, or represents, or what it is used for? Is it tribal or commercial?

    I have another chinese looking mask made of the same material but its a lot smaller.

    I appreciate any help

    I think it might be a Japanese theater mask,but i could be wrong. Pretty sure this is a decorative tourist item.

    Kabuki mask....looks light enough to be worn....paper mache....rather than cardboard..

    I would think it is a Chinese opera mask, Japanese Noh masks look different, and in Kabuki the actors usually do not wear masks, their faces are painted...

    Exactly. It is a replica of a Chinese Opera mask. And I agree with your other observations.
    The colours indicate the personality of the character or role.

    ya i have that same mask in a smaller ceramic piece , definitely tourist .
