Their Colonial Creations line, which saved them from bankruptcy in 1933, falls into the love it or hate it category today. I've been drawn to the pre 1948 pieces, which were all designed by Herman DeVies, and often have quirky, sometimes odd design elements. The build quality is top shelf. This N. Bennington, company was the pride of Vermont for over 100 years. Wild price variation is seen today - from less then $100 to $2000. in a big city designer shops. Showing up in Architectural Digest surely helped boost prices on certain pieces. 1940 Shaftsbury chair pictured. ee1cecd69fe6a82520b5d4c528fe05cd.jpg

Gosh, didn't everyone have a chair like that? Maybe not quite as artistic. All that heavy, maple furniture that seemed so ugly in the 60s and 70s.

How foresighted to design it with arms perfect for holding a smart phone!

I have 2 pieces...night table and 5 drawer dresser. From an uncle's estate...decades ago...Both have plaques inside with #s. It alwlays amazed me that the quality is so VERY good. I use them in my office for storage..

If your pieces have rectangular plaques with #'s. . . I can look up the year and name assigned. Oval plaques began in 1942 (no #), but all Cushman has model # impressed into the wood on bottom or back as well.

Thanks..that would be nice of you !!

dresser #4-168 night stand #4-169 (ps- nightstand is kind of unique form ..1 drawer-- cabinet w/door under it-- and open area under that)

PS--if numbers don't seem right..I would have to look in better light..my bifocals are a pain!)

Both are from the 'Peter Schuyler' group, both these #'s are listed as chests, 4-168 a 5 drawer & 4-169 a 4 drawer. - introduced in 1934, and continued until 1952. This was a popular style for Cushman.

Thanks !!! But I am confused...the 4-169 is NOT a 4 drawer. It is aprox 15x15x30 with 1 drawer and under that a door (which covers an cubbie --cabinet like) and an open bottom area at floor..:confused:

OK, it looks like you have a 'Peter Schuyler' night table # 4-162 with the wrong # on the tag. Produced from 1934-45. Neat piece. This is what Cushman collectors like...modernish/colonial - with a twist. Topped off with their russet finish which they introduced to the furniture industry, and was heavily copied in the 30s & 40s....but the Cushman finish was much nicer then their competitions. One more detail...Cushman used Northern yellow birch, not maple as many people believe. They felt it was superior to maple in terms of strength, resisting dents and grain which enhanced the finish. Cushman was a multi generational family company that really cared about quality.

Drew...you sound like an expert on Cushman. I have a question. i am tasked with selling an entire bedroom set of Cushman Colonial Creations for a Real Estate Client of mine. I have the Bradley J. Williams guide book. I cannot find one piece out of the 10 I am selling for this Estate. The piece looks just like No. 5-62 Night Table however it is a bit shorter and wider than the 5-62. The back has unfortunately been replaced at one time so there is no "embossed" number on the back top. There is a Cushman medallion on the inside of the drawer. I am super confused since it is NOT in the Williams book. With the veneer being replaced on the back I don't have a way of finding the number. It looks just like the 5-62 in every way except shorter and wider by only a few inches. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi Drew,
I have a table, China hutch, writing desk and 2 knick knack shelves. The plaques are rectangular with 9119 on the desk. But the knick knack shelves are imprinted with Cushman and a inverted D with the #9105. I can't find anything on these. Can you help me?

#9105 is the 'Finistere' wall shelves, made from 1939-41. #9119 is not in my book, but it was also introduced in 1939..... the first digit indicates the year.

Hi—I just acquired this exact chair above. It has a metal plaque with 083 embossed on it. I also got a matching foot stool and it’s plaque has 0191 embossed on it. Any idea of the value of this set? Thanks!
