need help for a Beaded Purse Handbag Dog design

Hello, I got an offer of $75 for a Beaded Purse Handbag with Dog design.

I just wonder if you could give me some idea of the age, origin and probably market value for it?

that's a lot of seed beads !!!!
and while there are condition issues.....75 seems low..

 

I don't mean to be rude but... Isn't that the type of research you should have done before listing your item on eBay?

The zipper and chain at the top look quite recent.

The zipper is plastic, so 1960s or later, but the beadwork could be much older. Someone made that by hand and did a nice job of it too. I'm not going to tell you what price to put on that, but it would be worth a lot more if the condition was better.

 

Without photos of the inside (none posted in your eBay listing, either), I'm not going to venture a guess as to age and whether the zipper is a modification or original.
That said, in it's current condition, I'd grab the $75. But that's just me.

 

It looks like someone separated this from it's original frame. I would be surprised at an offer that high except that dogs are not very common in beading and people do collect dogs. If I bought it I would rescue the blue panel and fix it with beads from the rest, then mount it in another piece. (Well - full disclosure-wise - I would plan to do that while putting it in a box and putting it somewhere safe where I'll never find it when I have time for it ) I'd grab the $75. cheers

 

Agree that photos of the inside should have been added. But I guess the person who gets this will be mostly after the beadwork, so hopefully your photos show that the inside was likely replaced.

It is hard to predict with something like this. Will two buyers have to have it? You'll probably never see another, so have that going for you.

My personal feeling is that (if fresh smelling, no mildew, etc.) it is worth more than $75, even with condition issues. It's a real work of art and desirable subject. People get emotional about dogs, and I can't recall ever seeing a dog like this on an antique beaded bag before. Nice it has the maker's initials on the back. But what sells for over $75 one day might not on the next day. (And again, guessing, but with damage, if you had active bidding, I do not think that the final value would exceed much over $125.) Not like it is worth thousands. So maybe you can't go too wrong with a solid offer of $75.

If you DO decide to accept the offer, since you can "choose the buyer or not" be sure to check the potential buyer's Feedback left for others. No point selling it to someone who leaves lot of negatives. The ability to check that adds a little extra value to the offer, too.

It's Victorian, I couldn't pin it down to a year though, the zip and chain don't belong, it would have had a clasp, maybe silver or plated.
That design is rare, it needs work but someone might like to restore it because the design isn't common.
I've never seen one like that and I've collected beadwork for a long time.

 

So would have started out life like this reticule. And modified with a zipper and chain in the late 1960s/early 1970s.

It looks similar to mine. And noticed the base clothes underneath, it shows similar texture.

I think they're brass.
