A friend found this in a storage unit he won at auction & sold it to me for $60. It is pretty big ( 38W x 23D x 21.5H ) & it is VERY heavy.

The 2 sections inside slide back & forth. One has 2 drawers + the top opens for storage. The 2nd one the top opens and inside there are slits like to store files or folders?

The only thing I can think of is a machinist chest / tool trunk/chest because the drawers are too small for clothes/ personal belongings, etc..
Also maybe it is so heavy so as to discourage someone walking off with it?

What is this I have? Any thoughts?
    Thank you!

Looks like a carpenter's tool trunk.

I have seen trunks/cases like these, which were advertised as cabinetmaker's chests, used for storing all the chisels, mallets, saws, hammers, drills etc etc etc etc...which were used to make fine furniture and cabinetry.

That would make a DANDY coffee table! Just think of the bits & bobs you could store inside it.

I found a piece of wood at the bottom of the trunk that although a little short, I think it goes between the 2 containers to cover anything in the bottom?
Also, here is a photo of 2nd container/box that I forgot to add in original post - what are all those slits for (they look like a knife holder in a silverware box!) - saw blades?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Those photos made me go weak at the knees and a lot of salvia started to form. That is a really wonderful tool chest.

Thanks Greg - is it so heavy to stop someone from stealing it?

    Hi,
It all depends what the guy had inside it. When I lived in Brooklyn my apartment building had a 300lb iron tub filled with soil weighing about another 150lbs. It also had a heavy chain welded to the stair railing. One morning I was going out and the tub, soil and chain were gone. No clues to the thieves or what they used.
