This curio has been sitting in my ‘I don’t have a clue’ pile waiting for identification.
I’ve googled but haven’t come up with anything similar.
Any clues please would be great!
When were these ‘a thing’? Has it come off something else or a stand alone curio?
    Thanks for looking :)

Strange, so it’s like an inlay?

I thought it looked like a diver too but thought it was my eyes. Or a knight?
It’s a different type of metal sitting in the cut out. It’s really odd.

I think it's supposed to be a knight, but it looks like a hard hat diver for sure. Dollars to donuts if you sold it the buyer would be more likely to have a connection to diving than knighthood!

I see a possible firefighters connection in the protection on the crown and back of neck. The breathing apparatus that I've google does not jive with my speculation.

    It's a nice mystery.

I think it's meant for a plumed jousting helmet along these lines:

But not as fancy as these:

:hilarious::hilarious: MOS those are awesome!. Imagine trying to gallop into battle wearing that on your head. Top right should have little fountains and bottom right birds nests.

The resident "military expert" (DH) says it looks to be a depiction of a US Navy Mark V Diving Helmet.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Looks to me (if you expand the image) that the shape was cut rather unevenly out of a piece of brass and then brazed (am probably NOT using that term right!) onto the shield shape along the edges! Maybe someone was trying to make a fun piece?? Is there writing or printing on the edge of that shield??? And, @KSW, if you gave a size, I didn’t see it, or missed it.....

The darker metal that makes up the picture seems separate from the surround. Two pieces stamped out and then one slotted inside the other. No writing I can see.
Sorry about the clear ruler I couldn’t locate the metal one!.
