Featured Desk lamp

Is this desk lamp anything interesting? Just stumbled across it in a thrift shop. It appears to be cast spelter, painted to look like bronze. I believe the paint could be original. The power cord has been cut but what’s left is cloth-covered, so old. I expect it originally had slag glass panels in it. Anyway, hopefully I did okay for $20. At the very least, should be a fun restoration project.

 

Nice, that style, if the item was from the UK, would be around the Edwardian period. I'd had snapped it up at that price too.

Thanks, I was thinking Edwardian, so I’m glad you agree. I plan to rewire it and replace the clear glass panels with something more interesting, but I haven’t decided yet with what, exactly.

 

Looks like it's been stripped and agree that the original opaque glass replaced with translucent. Will benefit from some TLC.

That poor lamp. I'm guessing the original glass broke and someone put plain glass in there because it's what they could get. It deserves better.

Or, afford. I’m finding myself shocked by the price of sheet slag glass and stained glass!

Maybe! I’m hoping to find some scraps for a reasonable price, as the lamp doesn’t need very big pieces.

 

Indeed. Looks like a cold painted desk lamp from the 1920s-30s. If you have a stained glass craftsman or repair person in town it would be super fast and easy to have them cut and install rectangular slag panes for your lamp. I'd vote for dark green slag as the most likely to mimic the original Sounds like you can handle the electrical work?

How about glue chip? A lot of glass repair places keep it in stock. Or maybe a ribbed glass like they use in kitchen cabinets. They used glue chip glass in the transoms of trolley cars, so it's the right era.

 

If that was brass, and $20.00, I would buy it AT ONCE!!!

 

Any stained glass supply store will have inexpensive alternatives to that glass. It would be uncomfortable using the lamp with plain glass in place.
