I found this chair at the curb and would like help identifying the era in which it was created. It has wooden castors on all four legs. I’m also curious as to whether the chair has any market value. I’m in the process of reupholstering the chair and it seems to be in sound structural condition but does have some nicks on its rear edges.

Thank you in advance for any information you provide.

The incised decoration reminds me of Eastlake that type of cresting though? Late Victorian? Are the back legs also turned?

    Welcome!

You'll have a much better chance of getting helpful answers if you post more and better pictures (higher resolution close ups from front, back and sides; legs and casters; underside of seat; material; ornamentation at top).

Bonus points if you can post photos with a plainer background, give us some dimensions and tell us where you found this (at the very least country and region).

    Good luck!

No, the back legs are not turned. They have a slight curve.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will do so later.

I found the chair in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. However, there is a tag on the bottom indicating that the chair was reupholstered in 1976 in Tarentum, Pa.

Thanks -- that's likely to help. Now let's wait and see what the experts say...

Even the upholstery appears to be in good condition.

Nice walnut arm chair ca. 1880s, mostly Eastlake in style with some lingering Renaissance Revival around the edges. It's a chair that would have been part of a multi-piece parlor set that would have included a sofa, maybe a love seat/settee, another arm chair and some side chairs.

We are (hopefully) coming out of a long depression in brown furniture prices. There are hints here and there, but for your purposes this chair is probably not worth much. I hope you intend to keep it after you reupholster it. At auction in my part of the U.S. Midwest it might bring $50-$75. Hope that improves in the next few years.

Interesting. I am no expert, but thought it might be Eastlake. I am reupholstering the chair as a project and not something where I expect to gain financially. The chair, it seems, only has a current value based on its intrinsic value as a chair, which is fine with me. I think it is a really interesting piece of furniture.

Agree completely with Ghopper on this other than value. Would be about half that in my semi-rural Midwest location. He is not all that far from me but our markets appear to be very different. Consequently, you may find your market different than ours. Large cities and coastal locations tend to do better than the Midwest.

Actually thinking of the auctions I go to in Kansas City and St. Louis, where the prices are a bit higher. That's me, always the optimist....:rolleyes:
