    Looks African to me. The bright (ish) colors don't look entirely natural / derived directly from plants, nor do they match anything I've seen on NA baskets.

    The plant fiber looks like palm rather than yucca or other material.

    Could be a Nigerian Hausa basket.

    Thank you potteryplease and komokwa for the responses that is what I thought as well but when I was using the google picture search some Apache baskets where coming up as well that looked similar so I just figured might as well come see you guys and see what everyone here had to say ..well once again thanks to everyone on the forum until next time take care.     To me it looks like an Ilala Palm basket from Zululand Nongoma or Hlabisa area. To me the design and colours are correct. Of course baskets are similar in many places round the world. These baskets when well and finely made were used for liquid, beer I believe. Taken from a website: "Large, watertight baskets with lids that fit snugly inside the opening at the top are called Ukhambas. Isichumo baskets have a lid that fits over and around the opening. Smaller Iquthu lidded baskets, or “herb baskets”, often have a looser weave, and are traditionally used to store medicinal remedies. [​IMG]
