Featured Royal Crown Derby Old Imari Cup & Saucer?

Hello Board Buddies - Hope these pictures come out okay. It's a dark, cool, rainy day in Indiana. I can't seem to get my lighting right unless there's sunlight coming through the windows. I'll be attending an outdoor garden commitment ceremony later today and the weather is not expected to improve.

Anyway, I have this Crown Derby Imari pieces that were sold as a cup and saucer set but I'm not so sure. The "saucer" is unusually deep. It measures 4 7/8" across and is 3/4" deep. I couldn't find a saucer like this on Replacements. Thought maybe it was an ashtray but the measurements don't match. The cup is 2" tall but I can't find this handle shape. Neither piece is marked except both have the number 56041 with an X underneath. Factory seconds? The fact that both are numbered the same leads me to believe they might go together. Finally the cup base seems just a little too small for the indent ring on the saucer. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for getting to the end of a rather long request! Correction: This is Traditional Imari not Old Imari. I bought a mixed lot and got confused as to which pieces were which.

Not Crown Derby. Is the saucer marked similarly? Saucers were deeper at one time because people used to pour the hot tea from the cup into the saucer to cool and sip it from the saucer, or so I was told. Pattern looks the same on both pieces so perhaps not a marriage. British imari patterns were made by many factories, not only Crown Derby.

 

Thank you, kentworld. That clears up a lot of questions actually. It's now pretty clear that I was under the wrong assumption that this is Crown Derby. A closer examination produced other subtle differences besides just the handle shape between Crown Derby and whatever it is I have. I will search for other manufacturers of Imari patterns. Again, much appreciated.

That saucer was made for a can shape.

 

Yes, that's rather what I thought. The saucer and cup are both marked 56041 but I suppose there could be a whole set with that number.

Yup, it's a pattern number.

 

Just thought I'd report back. I was turning the saucer around and noted a very faint impression in the center. With further scrutiny i could tell it read Minton.

Well, it could be a trio, coffee can,tea cup and saucer...nice that you looked closer. Some of the early impressed marks are quite faint once glazed.
