Marie, You ha e a spot-on answer. I worked at a greenhouse for years and plants in a decorative pot without drainage holes always were made up with a plastic liner so that excess water could be drained. Rocks in the bottom are really not a replacement for drainage, but, better than nothing. Mineral salts will still build up and eventually kill the plant and ruin your beautiful ceramic pot! Great purchase by the way!

Love this forum! Antique information with a dash of horticulture :)two threads in one!. I’ll probably put two pots inside each other with some stones in the bottom one to catch any excess water.

Thankyou. Can’t go wrong for £3, you could barely buy a new cheapy from the garden centre for that.

    Titchmarsh here,

Never ever plant a plant straight into a jardiniere, and never ever (almost) water a plant from the top, anyhow.

Put plant in plastic pot. Do not use crocks or anything, use a decent multi purpose or other appropriate compost.

To water - and most people massively overdo it - take plastic pot out and put said pot in bowl or sink of tepid water. Cold mains can be way too cold and shocks their wee toeses. Leave it about an hour, take it out and let it drain. I often squeeze the pot a bit, or tap it on the sink to get the excess out..

Then put it back in the cache pot or jardiniere. If you want to keep it off the base of said thing, use a bit of polystyrene foam or coir matting, it's much less damaging than stones.

Try cacti. Or rubber plants. Spider plants are night on indestructible!

I think this takes my fancy.
    Classy and understated
The broken vase finishes it off nicely. I’m not telling you that it’s for sale on eBay in case I get sniped.
    Dammit...too late...

@916Bulldogs123 can I be really cheeky and ask if this Pratt mark is in your Kovels?. Only look if you have spare time :)
I’ve just ordered both the up to and after 1850 editions so I won’t have to keep bothering you!
I can find quite a bit about Pratt but not about dating their marks. It’s on an Imari pattern mug if that makes any difference. Thankyou :)

    That's in Godden, as 1850+ to 1891.

    Thankyou for looking @Ownedbybear :) .
I’ve seen lots of pieces on the web that say F&R Pratt rather than just Pratt. Is that F&R mark in Godden too? If so is it contemporary with this mark or earlier/later?

    1991 edition.

Yes, there's some F&R marks as well, the Fenton variant is the same date as the plain one. I'll get photos.
