I just bought this little Kogo on eBay. I've not got it yet so these are the only photos I have. Can anyone help with the signature? It's not on Gothenburg

I know nothing about the mark, but it sure looks like something very frenetic is going on in that scene!

Translating Japanese when you dont know a lick is tiring. Sorry, but I only got as far as the bottom symbol being Zan, which can also be read as San. I'll try a little more, but no promises I find more info.

I think the 3rd mark has something to do with Zero, nothing, or the absence of?

EDIT: My brain hurt. In a go to sleep, and hope someone with bigger brain take over.

I'm not 100%, but I think it's a very poorly scripted version of Zenkozan, which is just 3 characters. The poor formatting makes it look odd.

Here's what it looks like when written properly:

I have never heard of Zenkozan, I initially thought Kinkosan. I was not aware they worked on Kogo's and or buttons. I am not sure I like the quality. I tis hard to find good quality satsuma on Ebay uk. Very hard in fact. The local Auction houses however are a very good source, salesroom or easylive are best for high quality Satsuma at good prices. You can get some good kaga kutani on ebay for almost nothing.

I actually think that this one might be pretty good quality but I won't know for sure until I get it. Mind you for £9.50 plus shipping I'm not going to worry too much.

It's a little known maker, but there are some pieces around, I have had one from them in the past. There were 100's if not 1000's of decorators/makers/dealers of Satsuma, I have found a few pieces with names of which there appear to be no records on the internet at all, even when searching in native Japanese.

It arrived. I think the quality is quite good. Nicely matching patterns around the edge and wisteria inside. Unusual subject. Possibly a dance scene. It’s only tiny. Just 8cm diameter and 2cm high. 30FB72D9-A20B-4745-83D9-B94B0E126724.jpeg 9363D489-A44D-436F-80A5-F3716A5773CD.jpeg EABF324C-55EE-43BE-89D5-80BC033A37C1.jpeg 47AEF3C5-CD1D-4156-8950-30A8EA97826D.jpeg

It looks alot better from your pictures and the Wisteria on the inside is happy suprise. I have some older Kinkozan kyo yaki and the smooth earthenware with almost invisible cracks not immediately noticable to the eye and i think the earthenware is what makes it beautiful as the art can be quite basic on it. I have never appreciated satsuma with noticeably large crackle and i guess that is just me. Unless the art is outstanding then I prefer the smooth earthenware most Satsuma has. Then again you have a makers mark and it is genuine satsuma and was good value so you should be happy with it.

I much prefer these types of Satsuma earthenware....

Looks good John, nice subject, possibly a theatre scene. Bargain at the price.

Are you ok for me to use these pics in the database?
