    Hi everyone,
I would be really grateful if you experts out there could please help me identify this beautiful plate. I know the handle has been broken and badly stuck back, but I still think it's a wonderful thing! It's very heavy and typically has no marks on the back apart from the one shown below. It is unexpectedly heavy and measures about 12" x 11". I am never sure how to describe a plate shaped like this - is it officially a dish? You can see what a beginner I am now!!
I would love to know its approximate age and maker - it's a work of art!
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Best wishes,
    Jane

Hi JanieB! It's a serving dish for small things- tri-part with it's 3 sections. The kind of thing that can get passed around with olives, gerkins, other small bites. At least that what my grandmother served in hers.

And I would say it's late 19th century ironstone transferware, with hand-colored embellishments, in an Aesthetic Movement Japonisme motif. The initials are probably of the factory colorist, who was paid a commission "by the piece". Can't hazard a guess as to maker. Quite charming!

Thank you both so much for taking the time to reply. If it is late 19th century, and it does 'feel' that old, I wonder what food they handed around in it back then!? I'd love to know. Thank you for indicating the type it is - I will spend some time researching Aesthetic Movement Japonisme now! It really is charming, and something I will be keeping, despite the damage. Thanks again, Jane

My grandmother had one like yours, different pattern.

I think this is spot on. I would feel a factory like WM Brownfield perhaps

Thank you very much for the suggested factory - I will definitely research them today. I had a quick look and was interested to see someone called Wood was there in the early years. The dish I have came from my grandmother whose family name was ... Wood! Coincidence? Probably! But worth checking out. Thanks again. Jane

BTW.. if the poor repair bothers you, there are restorationists who specialize in repairing ceramic and glass items.

Thanks - I may well consider having it repaired properly as it's so pretty. I can just see my grandmother mending it with a tube of bostik and a tea towel at the kitchen table! Do you have any idea of what the value might be - I was thinking only a few pounds?

The damage reduces the value unfortunately. But transferware still has a solid collectors' core. In a US shop, I would consider paying up to $25 for it, as-is.

It's nice to know it still has a value and $25 isn't bad at all considering the damage. It's worth a lot more to me though, having been in the family for around 130 or so years. Thanks again - and thanks to everyone who replied. I have lots of research to do. Jane.
