    I'm a bit confused, is this supposed to be silver? OP describes this piece as a "silver plate box", and it appears to show plating wear (perhaps a copper base?), especially on the corners of the bottom - am I just not seeing things correctly? The marks look vaguely familiar, but my memory isn't what it used to be (nor my eyesight), personally would suspect American silverplate, probably from around the 1920s...
