Featured Estate sale in my area - is this as overpriced as it looks?

The stuff for sale would make @Ghopper1924 happy. The price tags made me wonder. The sellers bought at the top of the market, no doubt, and in an antique store to boot. Some of the items say so The estate runner, I've been to her sales before, is trying to get about half the original price. About 30 things are available for sale before the sale starts. About the only thing calling my name is the Hoosier cabinet, but not at that price and I've nowhere to put it anyway.

I wouldnt even waste my time. I believe the sellers are trying to get back what they originally paid and at those prices they will have a hard time selling anything there. Just my opinion though.

So far the only item to pre-sell, when I looked, was a Honda mower. I think they're priced a "less than half" of what they paid originally, but they paid through the nose. I do OK with this seller by only buying the stuff she doesn't "know", i.e. not furniture. I've struck gold, literally, when buying jewelry from her. She sells a lot of furniture, but whoever buys this will be an end user or a decorator. The dining room set may end up broken up with bits serving as focal points in some one percenter's houses.

That would be a "U turn" estate sale. The second I walked in Id walk back out. But what a gorgeous house !

It's a bit of a hike so I'm doing my looking via the pictures.

Sorry, but this sale makes me far from happy. I'm not convinced that the seller "knows" furniture, either. Despite the dressy pictures, most of this stuff is "in the manner of" Victorian, or in some cases real, but low-end, Victorian. There are a few nice pieces, but nothing of real interest. And yes, these are 90s prices...long gone for the rest of us. Oh well, in order to get something positive out of this, I'll pretend that this heralds the Return of Brown Furniture.

Thanks for the tour, though. Always fun, and a good excuse to sharpen my aesthetic chops...:)

It's pretty and still useful. So far the only two things to pre-sell are the Honda riding motor and a stainless grill. There's a second mower, but it's a John Deere and it has the same pricing problem as the furniture.

Whoever purchased the Weber Genesis grill got a bargain. Those cost well over a thousand now, possibly close to $2K depending on the accessories. And, it's clean! I would have bought that if I needed a grill. But the rest of the stuff seems a bit high. I really liked the Henredon coffee table and thought it was priced well until I saw the damage. Maybe they expect the items to sell at half that price?

I dunno, but people are paying stupid money out there right now. At least here they are.

Yeah, what Ghopper & Johnny said, the only estate sales I have been to are at auction houses but the furniture here is way overpriced in my view.
The owners can recoup their furniture losses on the sale price of the house!:)

The problem here is that no one wants this type of furniture (ie. the Victorian sofa and other "antiques"). I went to an estate sale recently where they were selling more contemporary furniture and accessories of high quality and they got the huge prices they were asking. I was interested in a pair of lamps, but they were $1800 and I just couldn't do it. But I'll bet they sold on half price day. They were to die for! The condo/home was sold for over a million.

My former next door neighbor had a hooiser style cabinet in her kitchen.

It was on the small size as this is an apt building. It was amazing to see something so old up close. It was built into the kitchen when they built this building which I believe was in the 1940's perhaps the 30's. Some apts here also had faux fire places in the living room.

She passed on many years ago and the new neighbors redid the kitchen removing the hooiser style cabinet for a new updated kitchen. But they left the bones of the apt so it has some terrific features that makes one feel like they are going back in time. They have brown furniture in the living room and bedrooms, and it is like entering grandma's house but in a good way. The lady has a needlepoint that her mother made on the wall that is quite impressive. That alone is over 100 years old.

Edited to add. that neighbor couple are in the 90's with the husband being 99 so they have some wonderful antiques and vintage items.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

That Hoosier Cabinet is in PRISTINE condition!!!!!! Gorgeous!!!! BUT VERY Pricey!!!

The Hoosier Cabinet, the Singer sewing machine (which I SO DON'T need!) and the Bakers Rack are what I like the best......(not at those prices!!!) but otherwise, I'm seeing a LOT of REPLICATION of Photos on scrolling through ALL!!!! House IS interesting though!!

Got our Hoosier cabinet that is in the same condition from what I can tell from the pictures, without the shiny finish job, about 3 years ago and paid $350 for it, which was higher than i should have gone. Sorry for the run-on sentence there.

Took a look tonight, and still only the riding mower and grill have gone. The rest are still sitting; with the prices posted I can't say I'm surprised.

It is a beautiful house but the antique furnishings don't match the house. It's a good price for all you get. Way too big for my meager needs but I would love the land and the pond, but only if it came with a caretaker.

Same here. It was probably custom. That stone-lined circular staircase and the vaulted wood beam living room are awesome . That six-burner stove alone with the wall oven got my interest. It's actually fairly close to the main shopping area and right off a highway exit, so it's not as remote as it looks. Somebody else thought so too because it's under contract. I'm guessing they're selling off what they used to stage the house.
