Dark veneered wooden cabinet. Purchased at an antique shop and they said it came from an old house in Saugerties, NY. It has a drawer underneath the main cabinet door. No markings that I can see anywhere. (Checked under & inside drawer, all over the outside, inside the cabinet.) It’s carved with roses, faces on the legs, and what I think are fairies on the front.

I just want to know if anyone has seen anything like this before. I’d love to know what it is / was.

Hi @CarbyBarbie, and WELCOME!! It looks like you may have your Gallery set to PRIVATE so no-one can see your images....if you go back in and make it, I think either Members or Public, then we should be able to see your images....thanks!!

WOW!! Yes, you fixed it, and That's one beautiful cabinet, and it does rather look like it is or was a cabinet for music! Love the carving on the front and legs!!! And I can't tell you more about it, but others should be along....

That explains the thumping noises I’ve been hearing. :)

    Very tasteful arrangement of the….err….clothing?
That makes me think of Alice in Wonderland :)

Not convinced this is a music cabinet. Not enough shelves. Maybe a linen chest. Otherwise, seems to be vintage at best. Not American in origin and carving quality is a bit sub-par. Italy 50s-60?

More like a dining room piece ca. 1920s - 30s.

I agree with linen cabinet. The Cupid and Psyche carving could also then kinda-sorta make sense... a furniture piece for a married couple, or used as a "hope" chest.
My two cents on age: 1930s-50s.

The Cupid & Psyche decoration does seem more appropriate for the boudoir, but...?

The carver has abandoned convention by giving Cupid the butterfly wings that are normally an attribute of Psyche, instead of his usual feathered wings.
